The most common of rebuilds, these FRONT differentials all share the same part across platforms from 2003-2018. The change to a newer style in 2011 resulted in double roller bearings for the pinon and an overall smaller and weaker design. Regardless, both generations experience a common failure which starts with a whine or “hum” at 30-60mph. Skip changing the wheel bearings, they rarely fail. A full rebuild is required and oil changes with full synthetic 75W-90 every 30k miles is recommended.

  • Pinion torqued to 8inlbs rotational torque (2011-2018), 15inlbs (2003-2010)

  • Case sealed with black RTV.

  • *New breather tube installed if required (add $35).

  • New needle bearing installed if required (very rare) (add $40).

Items not addressed:

  • Exterior filth and grime.

BMW X-Drive

The second most common of rebuilds, these FRONT differentials share the same internals from 2003-2016 and 2016-2019. In 2019.5, the internals were redesigned with…weaker…components.

  • New FAG/INA pinion bearings.

  • Factory ZF or BMW pinion and axle seal.

  • Pinon torqued to 8inlbs rotational torque.

  • Case sealed with black RTV.

2019.5+ differentials are compatible externally but internally the bearings were downsized and down graded. Now using a single roller small pinion bearing and ZWZ Chinese carrier bearings, BMW really made a poor decision. European distributors are currently unable to locate these bearings aftermarket.

Rear Differentials

Starting at $599.99

The rear differential is responsible for most of the work in powering your car. These rarely fail. More robust bearings and a 50% increase in fluid capacity keeps things well lubed and running cooler.

That said, if you are experiencing a failure in the rear, please reach out. Obtaining parts usually requires a special call to my European distributors and can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks to obtain. Price starts at $599.99 but will likely be higher. No markup on parts here, they are just harder to obtain.
